Choose Shopify when its hosted operating model and the tested apps you need fit your business. Choose WooCommerce when your WordPress content and commerce requirements justify the additional implementation and maintenance responsibility. Keep Etsy working during the transition: a new storefront does not automatically replace marketplace discovery.
The decision for an Etsy seller
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which products belong on the new channel? | A focused launch is easier to validate than a complete historical catalog |
| How will people reach it? | Marketplace visitors do not automatically become direct-store visitors |
| Which provider fulfills each variation? | Storefront choice must fit actual order routing |
| Who will maintain the setup? | Hosted infrastructure and app management differ from a self-managed stack |
| What does the hardest cart contain? | Shipping and delivery complexity can change the cost of either option |

Adding a channel is different from closing Etsy
Shopify’s official Etsy migration guide explicitly recognizes keeping an Etsy presence while expanding. Our Etsy and WooCommerce guide applies the same practical principle: give the new channel a reason to exist and keep channels that still work.
Examples include a differentiated bundle, a broader product range or educational content that helps customers choose. These are editorial examples, not permission to divert transactions or reuse customer information contrary to marketplace rules. Build your own acquisition and consent processes for the new store.
Compare the complete operating setup
Shopify’s pricing page includes hosting and describes plan-dependent payment and third-party transaction fees. Review your country, payment provider and billing interval rather than copying a headline price. Apps, themes and implementation work can add to the cost.
For WooCommerce, build a matching quote: hosting, domain, selected extensions, payment processing, setup, backups and maintenance. Do not compare a managed store against an empty installation. Our launch-budget guide and break-even calculator help keep the assumptions visible.
Hosted infrastructure does not eliminate all merchant work. In either setup, somebody owns product data, app configuration, fulfillment exceptions and customer communications. For WooCommerce, specifically assign updates, restore testing and compatibility checks before launch.
Prove your catalog before choosing the design
Select a simple product, a complex variation product and a mixed cart. Record options, SKUs, prices, stock rules, images and provider mappings. Start with the catalog preparation guide and Etsy variation mapping.
Shopify’s CSV documentation defines its product import structure. An export from Etsy is not automatically a complete destination catalog. Likewise, a product import does not move all customer records, order history, payment details or integrations.
Use a stable multichannel SKU plan before adding sync tools. Define whether Etsy, the store, a stock system or the fulfillment provider owns each field. Two connectors trying to manage the same quantity can create more risk than a controlled manual launch.
Match the platform to the team
Shopify is worth shortlisting when
The team prefers a hosted store, the necessary integrations have been demonstrated and ongoing app costs fit the budget. Test the exception cases as well as normal orders. A large app marketplace is not evidence that your particular stack works together.
WooCommerce is worth shortlisting when
A WordPress content strategy or a specific catalog and checkout requirement is central to the business, and someone can maintain the resulting implementation. Prototype the requirement using the smallest practical set of components. Avoid purchasing flexibility you have no present reason to use.
Neither may be the right next project
If you cannot identify an offer, a traffic route or time to operate another channel, validate those first. A seller with little spare capacity may get more value from improving existing listings and building permitted audience channels. New sellers can use our starting without an audience guide before committing to a larger build.
A controlled launch sequence
- Choose a small launch catalog and document which products remain Etsy-only.
- Rehearse product and variation import; inspect images, prices and SKU mappings.
- Configure shipping, delivery, payments and emails for the destinations you actually serve.
- Test successful and failed payments, mixed carts, refunds and provider routing.
- Prepare source-specific campaign links and a realistic acquisition calendar.
- Redirect only URLs you control and monitor the resulting customer journey.
- Keep a support owner and rollback plan during the launch period.
Use the checkout test plan and SEO migration checklist to make those checks concrete. You cannot install your own redirects on an Etsy listing URL, so distinguish marketplace links from a custom domain you control.
Already on Shopify and considering WooCommerce?
Do not repeat the original platform decision from scratch without evidence. List the actual limitation, the workaround cost and the proposed replacement. A migration may make sense for a proven business requirement; frustration with one app may call for a smaller repair.
Preserve products, orders, customers, consent records, URL mappings, subscriptions and operational integrations in separate workstreams. Confirm payment and account portability rather than assuming a migration app handles everything. Rehearse with current data before committing to a cutover date.
The next useful step
Score readiness using the owned-store readiness tool, then build a 90-day traffic plan. If dependencies are uncertain, start with an Owned Store Readiness / Migration Audit. Once WooCommerce is the supported choice, a new store launch or scoped migration should implement the proven workflow and preserve the marketplace channel that still serves your business. Compare starting prices and scope boundaries before committing.
