Payhip is a sensible place to stay when selling and delivering your digital products is straightforward. Consider WooCommerce when you can name a valuable workflow your current setup cannot support economically, and when you have the budget and ownership to maintain the replacement. Revenue growth alone is a weak reason to migrate.

The 60-second decision
| Your situation | Start here | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Downloads sell through an established audience and delivery works | Keep Payhip | Support tickets and recurring costs |
| A content-led store needs a different catalog and buying journey | Evaluate WooCommerce | A working prototype of the difficult journey |
| You want a nicer site but have little qualified traffic | Improve the offer and acquisition first | Visitor sources and product-page behavior |
| Courses or recurring memberships are essential | Test the complete replacement before deciding | Access rules, billing continuity and student history |
For the wider shortlist, use our six-platform decision guide. If the business model itself is undecided, first compare digital, POD and physical products.
What Payhip already does
Payhip lists digital downloads, courses, coaching, memberships and physical products. Its pricing page checked on October 20, 2026, lists a free plan with a 5% platform transaction fee, Plus at $29/month with 2%, and Pro at $99/month with no Payhip transaction fee. Payment-processor fees still apply. Check the live page before budgeting; moving plans may solve a fee problem without a migration.
At those listed rates, Plus and Free have the same platform cost at about $966.67 in monthly sales: $29 divided by the three-percentage-point fee difference. Plus and Pro meet at $3,500: the $70 subscription difference divided by 2%. Above each threshold, the higher plan costs less in platform fees alone. This arithmetic excludes processing fees, taxes and other costs; treat it as a plan comparison only.
Do not confuse a platform fee with the entire cost of selling. Compare your actual monthly sales, refunds, processing charges and paid services. Then price the replacement including setup and the hours needed to operate it. Our owned-store break-even calculator helps examine assumptions; it does not predict future sales.
When staying is the stronger decision
Imagine a designer selling printable planners through an email list. Buyers receive their files, support is manageable and the next priority is improving the product range. Rebuilding the checkout could consume the same time needed to publish the next planner. In this illustrative scenario, a better digital product page is a more direct experiment than changing platforms.
Stay when the current arrangement meets the next six months of requirements and the proposed move has no measurable benefit. Record what would change that decision: a particular bundle rule, a required integration or an editorial structure that you cannot implement satisfactorily. Revisit the decision when that trigger occurs.
Five signals worth investigating
- You repeatedly rebuild the same manual workaround for fulfillment or customer access.
- A required integration cannot reliably exchange the fields your business needs.
- Search-led educational content is becoming a major acquisition route and needs a better relationship with the catalog.
- Buyers struggle to find products because the current information architecture no longer matches the range.
- A necessary purchasing workflow fails a real prototype, even after checking available platform options.
These are investigation prompts. Check each one with Payhip before concluding a feature is missing. Ask support, test the relevant plan and document the result. More plugins or a fashionable redesign are weak reasons to abandon a functioning business.
What WooCommerce changes for digital delivery
WooCommerce separates virtual products from downloadable files, with configurable download permissions and limits in its official digital-product documentation. A course, subscription or membership requires its own implementation decision; a downloadable product and a learning platform are different builds.
Prototype one representative order using our WooCommerce digital-download setup guide. Include payment, confirmation email, file access and a returning customer. Also test an expired link and the process for updating files for past customers. Test historical customer access separately from new purchases.
A realistic Payhip migration inventory
| Item | Decision before moving |
|---|---|
| Products and files | Map titles, prices, licenses, versions and source files |
| Existing buyers | Decide what access each purchase should retain; verify available exports |
| Courses and memberships | Map lessons, progress, entitlements and renewal handling separately |
| Subscriptions | Confirm payment portability with the actual providers; never assume a CSV moves billing |
| URLs | List destinations you control and redirects you can implement |
| Move addresses together with their consent records and suppressions | |
| Orders and analytics | Decide archive access, reporting cutover and attribution continuity |
Run a small rehearsal before choosing a launch date. Keep the old system available for the agreed support period. A refund on the original payment may still need handling there. Tell customers clearly about any action they need to take before access changes.
Use the SEO migration checklist for URL mapping and the checkout test plan for purchase verification. Pages hosted on a platform-owned domain may offer different redirect controls from a domain you manage; verify the redirect options for each before promising them.
Choose a maintainable replacement
Name the person responsible for updates, restores, delivery failures and processor disputes. Budget the time even if you do the work yourself. If the only attraction is “free software,” build a launch budget before committing.
Can I keep Payhip and use WordPress for content?
That can be a useful intermediate arrangement if the customer journey is clear. Test outbound checkout tracking, navigation back to your content and support ownership. Do not add a second full store unless its separate role justifies duplicated work.
Will WooCommerce automatically improve SEO or sales?
No. Product usefulness, search intent, content quality and a usable buying journey still need work. Diagnose traffic versus conversion before attributing weak sales to your platform.
Your next decision
Write one sentence: “Moving would allow us to do X, worth Y, and Z will maintain it.” If you cannot complete it, stay and investigate. Use the readiness tool for a first pass, or request an Owned Store Readiness / Migration Audit to scope the unresolved requirements before a build.
Readiness Audit
Plan the build before you pay for it
The Owned Store Readiness Audit reviews your catalog, operations, budget and route to customers. You get written findings, a 45-minute walkthrough and a clear call: build now, start smaller or fix the gaps first. $349 USD.
